Raindance 2010

Im sure it's undoubtedly no surprise to anyone that Regent Street is a  rather chaotic place every day of the year. Every October, however, the term 'chaotic' takes on a whole new level of meaning. This is where Regent Street plays host to one of the most prestigious events in the UK social calendar.

A vast labyrinth of green colored gazebo's shelters a wide array of electronic equipment, including High Definition TV sets and custom built home cinema systems sporting an arsenal of the latest in visual entertainment from independent directors all around the world. One such encampment that I visited this year came complete with its own foul-mouthed hobo-esque individual hollering the synopsis of his latest film. This was just one among dozens of identical 'movie theatres' dotted throughout Berwick Street for this years particularly notable Raindance Film Festival.

An event largely overshadowed by its glitzier brother, The London Film Festival, Raindance has been an advent of independent film-making in the UK for the last 18 years, featuring cameos from the likes of Memento and The Blair Witch Project, both of which went on to commercial success in their own right.

The Raindance Film Festival offers talented young directors the opportunity to showcase their latest and greatest cinematic works, regardless of the production values. Taking place annually in London, the festival is highly endorsed by many already well established directors, patrons including Ken Loach and Terry Gilliam and appearances from the likes of Ewan McGregor, Alan Rickman and Dame Judi Dench to name but a few.
